Vermeer Work Earns $30,000,000

The first painting by the Dutch Old Master Johannes Vermeer to be sold at an auction in decades was bought for more than $30 million Wednesday. The 10 inch-by-8 inch picture, "Young Woman Seated at the Virginals," far exceeded the reserve price of $5.5 million when it went under the hammer at Sotheby's in central London.

The work, showing a young woman playing music, with her face turned toward the viewer, was the first Vermeer painting be put up for auction in more than 80 years, Sotheby's said. A company spokeswoman said it was sold to an anonymous buyer for $30,101,472, including a buyer's premium.

The painting is now the only accepted Vermeer work currently in private hands, Sotheby's said. There are just 35 other paintings around the world attributed to Vermeer, making auctions of his work a rare event. Full Story

$5 Painting Nets $1,000,000

A man who paid $5 for a 19th-century painting he bought at a garage sale has sold it to a museum for $1 million, an art publication reported. The unidentified 29-year-old actor found Joseph Decker's "Ripening Pears" wrapped in a blanket at a Los Angeles garage sale three years ago, the report in ARTnewsletter said.

The woman who sold him the painting said it had been sitting in her garage for more than 60 years. Decker painted it around 1884 or 1885. The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., bought the painting in February for $1 million, said Meredith E. Ward, who served as the man's broker.

The painting hung on the man's kitchen wall for two years before he decided to do an Internet search on Decker, according to ARTnewsletter. Once he realized Decker's fame, the man e-mailed a digital photo of the picture to the Manhattan-based Richard York Gallery, which specializes in 19th- and 20th-century American art. "I looked at the e-mail, and I said, 'It's too good to be true," said Ward, executive vice president of the gallery.

The Madonna of the Pinks

The National Gallery of Scotland was making an announcement today on its campaign to acquire Raphael’s painting, The Madonna of the Pinks. It declined to comment on the nature of the announcement but said its director, Charles Saumarez Smith, would be present to speak to the media.
The gallery, where the painting has been on long-term loan since 1992, has been battling to keep it in the country.

In January last year the Department for Culture, Media and Sport placed an export ban on the art work going abroad. Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell has not yet made known what she thinks would constitute a compensating offer – the amount of money offered to the owner as compensation for keeping the painting in Britain. The owner, the Duke of Northumberland, needs the export ban to be lifted to sell the work to the J Paul Getty Museum in California for a reported £35 million. Related Article
